How do I set up Emacs for editing LaTeX?

I want to edit LaTeX using Emacs, and installing AUCTeX on Ubuntu using sudo apt-get texlive auctex automatically hooks up .tex files inside Emacs, so that is fine.

I also figured out that C-c C-c (Control+c, Control+c) compiles my LaTeX document, but how do I make AUCTeX compile PDF files and use Evince (the default PDF document viewer in Ubuntu) when I hit C-c C-v (Control+c, Control+v) instead of the less pretty-looking xdvi or xpdf programs?

Do I need to make changes to my .emacs configuration file in my home directory?

C-c C-t C-p changes between latex and pdflatex mode (.dvi or .pdf).

You can see many more keyboard shortcuts associated with AUCTeX just by looking in the "LaTeX" menu, which appears when latex-mode is loaded.

The default PDF-viewer is set through the variable TeX-view-program-selection. You can define it in .emacs.d/init.el, or through the menu "Options::Customize Emacs" (of which it sounds as if you weren't aware?)
